Previously On Urban Focus

Benjamin Todd Jealous
The role of civil rights organizations in today’s world will be the subject of the next Urban Focus. The program will include an interview with Benjamin Todd Jealous, the president and chief executive of the N.A.A.C.P. Mr. Jealous leads the nation’s largest civil rights organization and he discusses the agenda of the historic group and a host of other issues, from the impact of the Tea Party to the controversy over Shirley Sherod, the Agriculture Department official whose dismissal triggered a national discussion over race.

Hasan Kwame Jeffries
The program will also include an interview with Hasan Kwame Jeffries, a renowned professor of history at the Ohio State University. Mr. Jeffries discusses the N.A.A.C.P., the historic role of civil rights groups and how that role has both changed and remained the same. Mr. Jeffries is the author of “Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt.” The book offers a fascinating look at the struggle for black voting rights and civil rights in a relatively obscure county in Alabama – and the implications of that struggle for 21st Century America. He has studied a wide array of civil rights leaders and he discusses the history and current challenges facing the civil rights community.
