Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, discusses strategies to stimulate the economy of urban centers with a specific look at his economic development efforts in western New York. Mr. Brown, who is the first African American mayor of Buffalo, will also give his take on this year’s statewide elections in New York, including the selection by Andrew M. Cuomo, the presumed Democratic candidate for governor, of Rochester Mayor Robert J. Duffy for the lieutenant governor’s job.

Lynette Holloway
The program also includes a look at the small, but vocal number of conservative African Americans who have been drawn to the Tea Party movement. Lynette Holloway, a Chicago-based writer and former New York Times reporter, discusses an article she recently wrote in theRoot.com on black Tea Party members. She is a former associate editor for Ebony magazine.

Frank Haye
Additionally, the program provides a preview of the new interdenominational choir being formed in Brooklyn. Noted choral conductor Frank A. Haye will lead the choir, whose formation was recently announced by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and City Councilwoman Leticia James.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.
Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
