Malcolm Smith
Malcolm A. Smith, the President of the New York State Senate, discusses a wide range of public policy issues, from economic development to the turbulent politics of Albany. Senator Smith, a Democrat, represents a district in southeastern Queens. He also offer his take on the upcoming elections in the New York State’s political landscape this year.

James Sanders
The program will also include an interview with New York City Councilman James Sanders, who is the chairman of the Council’s Committee of Civil Service and Labor. Councilman Sanders was the first African American chairman of the Council’s Economic Development Committee. He will discuss the challenges and prospects for stimulating business development in communities of color in urban areas. He was in charge of a study that pointed to disparities that led to New York City revisiting its affirmative action policies.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.
Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
