Previously On Urban Focus
Civil rights leadership, past and present, is the focus of this edition of Urban Focus. The nation lost two prominent civil rights leaders recently and Urban Focus looks at the lives of Benjamin Hooks, the longtime leader of the NAACP, and Dorothy Height, who led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years.

Roger Witherspoon
The program includes an interview about Mr. Hooks with Roger Witherspoon, a journalist, author and educator who has written on national and international affairs as well as civil rights and defense. He recently wrote a piece about Mr. Hooks in The Root, the online magazine. Mr. Witherspoon is also a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Lynette Holloway
The program also includes an interview with Lynette Holloway, a Chicago-based writer, a former New York Times reporter and associate editor for Ebony magazine. She recently wrote a piece about Dorothy Height in the Root, the online magazine.

Hasan Kwame Jeffries
Also, there is an in-depth discussion with author Hasan Kwame Jeffries about developments and changes the leadership in the civil rights leadership over the last several decades. Dr. Jeffries, a renowned historian at Ohio State University, is the author of “Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt.” The book offers a fascinating look at the struggle for black voting rights and civil rights in a relatively obscure county in Alabama – and the implications of that struggle for 21st Century America.
