C. Virginia Fields

C. Virginia Fields, the former Manhattan Borough president, is now the president and chief executive of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. She discusses the impact of the AIDS crisis in urban America on the next Urban Focus. Ms. Fields, who is well known for her activism during the heyday of the Civil Rights Movement in her native Alabama, moved to New York and became a member of the City Council before being elected borough president. Mr. Fields was also a candidate for Mayor of New York City in WHEN. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Social Work.

George Curry

George Curry

George Curry, the noted writer and columnist, discusses his perspective on the Obama Administration’s policies and strategies. For many years, Mr. Curry served as president of the American Society of Magazine Editors, the first African-American to hold the association’s top office. He also served as editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine for seven years. Mr. Curry also served as editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service in Washington, D.C.

Tiffany Raspberry, a political consultant, looks at the political maneuverings in Harlem, where longtime Congressman Charles Rangel is being challenged by Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, the son of the man Mr. Rangel defeated some 40 years ago.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.

John Flateau, a senior fellow and co-founder of DBC, offers an exciting, detailed account of the evolution of African-American politics in Brooklyn in his new book, “Ebonopolis.” The book looks at the successes, challenges and competitions that have shaped generations of elections in the heart of New York City’s most populous borough.
