Margaret Chin immigrated to the United States with her family from Hong Kong when she was nine years old. And for more than 30 years she was worked as a community organizer and in public service in New York City, helping immigrants, low income and working families. Today, she is a member of the New York City Council and chair of the Council’s Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Committee. She discusses a number of issues, including the city’s education policy and immigration.

The program also includes an interview with Wendell E. Pritchett, a noted scholar in urban history and policy and the chancellor of Rutgers University at Camden. He discusses his ideas about urban policy in the country as well as the life of the late Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Robert Weaver, the first African-American cabinet secretary.

Dr. Pritchett chaired the Urban Policy Task Force for the presidential campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. He also served as director of policy for Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. And he has written two books and numerous articles on urban history and policy, particularly in the areas of housing, race relations, land use, and economic development. His most recent book is Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City: The Life and Times of an Urban Reformer.

And Joan Parrott Fonseca, a professor of public policy at Medgar Evers College, will discuss the low response rate in Brooklyn to the census. Dr. Fonseca, who is a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center, was the first woman to serve as the Director of the Minority Business Development Agency in the Commerce Department, the agency that is responsible for the census.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
