Carl Heastie
Assemblyman Carl E. Heastie, the Democratic Party leader in the Bronx, discusses the state’s current political scene and his aspirations in leading the party in his borough. He is the first African-American Democratic Party chairman in the Bronx.
Mr. Heastie, who represents the northeast Bronx, was elected in 2000 and is one of the youngest African-American New York State legislators. He has become one of the most influential political leaders in the state.

Charles Ellison
The program also includes an interview with Charles Ellison, the host of “The New School,” the public affairs on the Sirius/XM Satellite Radio Network. He discusses the federal government’s efforts at job creation and President Obama’s bipartisan initiatives. Mr. Ellison is the author of the critically-acclaimed urban political thriller TANTRUM. He is also the director of the Center for New Politics and Policy at the University of Denver. He is a frequent contributor to The Huffington Post, Politico’s “The Arena” and TheRoot.com.

Joan Parrott Fonseca
In recognition of Black History Month, the broadcast also includes a look at the life and legacy of Ronald H. Brown, the first African-American Secretary of Commerce. He served during the first term of President Bill Clinton. Joan Parrott-Fonseca discusses the career of Mr. Brown. Ms. Parrott- Fonseca, who is a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center and a professor at Medgar Evers, was the first woman to serve as the Director of the Minority Business Development Agency in the Commerce Department under Mr. Brown.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.
Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
