Yvette Clarke
United States Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke discusses a wide range of topics, from President Obama’s job growth strategy to the politics of 2010 New York.
Ms. Clarke is a Democrat who represents several neighborhoods in central Brooklyn. She is a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Homeland Security. She is the chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology.
Prior to being elected to Congress, she served in the New York City Council. She succeeded her pioneering mother, former City Council Member Una S. T. Clarke, making them the first mother-daughter succession in the history of the Council.

Major R. Owens
The program will also include a Black History Month reflection on the life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress. She represented Brooklyn from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first major-party black candidate for president and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Speaking about Ms. Chisholm is former Congressman Major R. Owens, a Brooklyn Democrat who succeeded Ms. Chisholm in Congress. Mr. Owens is a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
