In this broadcast, Urban Focus comes from Lagos, Nigeria, focusing on issues and personalities in one of the world largest urban centers.

The show features an interview with Fidelis Duker, one of Nigeria’s most prolific film producers and directors. He is an award winning filmmaker and the founder of the Abuja International Film and Video Festival. Mr. Duker is also the national president of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, the only association protecting the interest of all television and film directors in Nigeria.

The program also features an interview with Jide Sanwoolu, the commissioner for Establishment and Training in Lagos State. Mr. Sanwoolu discusses the successes and challenges of the government’s planning policies.

Also, the show includes an interview with Saidat Odoffin-Benjamin, the founder of Nutmeg Media, a media and entertainment company. Ms. Oddofin-Benjamin is one of Nigeria’s high-powered women in business. And Nicholas Tattersall, the Nigeria correspondent for Reuters, discusses how Nigeria is faring with the recession and how Lagos is coping with his stature as a international urban center.

Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host. He traveled to Lagos and conducted the interviews there.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
