Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s election as president of Liberia in 2005 was a milestone because she became the first woman elected head of state of any nation in Africa. Since her election, she has sought to restore stability to Liberia after nearly 15 years of civil war. Her emphasis has been to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and expand opportunities for education, economic development and health care.
