Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the president of Liberia, discusses her country’s efforts to rebuild itself on the next Urban Focus. President Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman elected to lead an African country, discusses the challenges and successes in leading Liberia in the aftermath of nearly 15 years of civil war.

The program also includes an interview with James Kollie, the deputy coordinator of the Liberia Reconstruction and Development Committee. He will discuss some of the country’s plans to develop the infrastructure of Liberia, focusing on roads, schools and hospitals.

The program also includes a discussion with some of Liberia’s up-and-coming young singers and rappers who describe the current entertainment scene. The discussion includes Rabbie Nass, Nicholas Buigar, Sametta Morris, Slo Diamond, Friday the Cell Phone Man and Sundygar Dearboy.
Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host. He is now traveling in Liberia and to report on the development of West Africa’s oldest independent country.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.
Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
