Adriano Espaillat, the first Dominican American elected to any state legislature in American History, discusses the growing political power of the Dominican community, the next Urban Focus, the weekly radio program broadcast in conjunction with the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College. The show will be broadcast on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. Mr. Espaillat, an assemblyman from Manhattan, will also discuss his view on a number of policy issues and the politics of New York State in 2010.

The program also includes an interview with Phil Thompson, a professor of urban planning and politics at MIT. He is an executive committee member and co-founder of the Emerald Cities Collaborative, a comprehensive program to retrofit America’s urban building stock and to create green jobs for urban America with the aim of making those jobs highly inclusive of workers who are African American, Latino and Asian.

Also, the show includes an interview with Joe Branch, the co-founder of U Want Game, a non-profit organization dedicated to building the personal and professional life skills of high school student athletes.

Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
