Congressman Gregory Meeks, a Democrat who represents Queens, discusses the federal stimulus plan and the politics of 2010 on the next Urban Focus, the weekly radio program broadcast in conjunction with the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College. The show will be broadcast on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. Mr. Meeks is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The program also includes an interview with the Rev. Calvin Butts, the president of the State University of New York at Old Westbury and the pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He and the Abyssinian Church have put together a new initiative: they have established a non governmental organization that assists coffee growers in Ethiopia develop and improve their business strategy.

Also, the show includes a discussion with Professor Eugene Pursoo, a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy, on relations between the United States and Cuba. Mr. Pursoo served as the ambassador to the United Nations from Grenada and served as vice president of the United Nations General Assembly.

Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
