Kurt Schmoke, the former mayor of Baltimore and current dean of Howard University’s School of Law, discusses the 140-year history of the law school on Urban Focus, the weekly radio program broadcast in conjunction with the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College. Mr. Schmoke discusses the challenges and opportunities facing the school in the 21st Century as well as his views how the nation’s urban agenda is faring.

The program also includes an interview with Alvin Parks, the mayor of East Louis, Ill. Mr. Parks will discuss the issues that face cities like his, communities such as Newark and Camden, N.J., Gary, Ind.. They are smaller, often forgotten urban centers that neighbor larger and better-known major cities.

Also, the show features an interview with Richard Prince, who writes a column on diversity issues in the news media on the web site of the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. Mr. Prince talks about some of the difficulties facing African American media organizations and people of color in journalism.

Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
