Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx Borough President, discusses a number of topics, from urban development policy to New York City’s mayoral politics, on Urban Focus. Mr. Diaz, who became borough president earlier this year, discusses the political impact of the extension of term limits as well as his views on economic development in urban American.

The program also includes an interview with Rufus Williams, the former president of the Chicago Board of Education. Mr. Williams, who stepped down from that position earlier this year, discusses the recent violence involving Chicago public school students – events that caused President Obama to dispatch two cabinet secretaries to that city. Mr. Williams offers his views on short- and long-term remedies to the longstanding problem of youth violence.

Also, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn discusses a bill he authored that aims to create more affordable housing. Under that legislation, the state would provide assistance to developers to refinance troubled loans to encourage them to convert their financially-troubled condominiums and rental properties into moderate-income apartments.

Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
