How can the job of New York City Public Advocate affect people who live in the traditionally underserved communities of the city?
The four major Democratic candidates for the city’s second-highest position offer their responses on the inaugural show of Urban Focus, a weekly radio program on Medgar Evers College Radio hosted by Jonathan Hicks, a senior fellow at DBC and former political reporter for The New York Times. City Councilmen Bill de Blasio and Eric Gioia, former Public Advocate Mark Green and civil rights lawyer Norman Siegel will discuss their views on the role of Public Advocate and their priorities for the job.




The program also feature a conversation with former Congressman Major Owens about the life and work of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, with whom he served in Congress for 24 years. Congressman Owens is currently a senior fellow and distinguished lecturer at DBC. The program includes an interview with Abdullah Kiatamba, the editor and publisher of the Liberian Journal, about the rebuilding of that West African country after nearly two decades of civil conflict.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
