Roberto Ramirez

Roberto Ramirez, a prominent political consultant and former Bronx Democratic Party chairman, discusses the political environment in America in the age of Obama. In a rare interview, Mr. Ramirez talks about everything from the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court to his perspective of the reaction to the Obama health care initiatives. The show will be broadcast on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m.

Also, on that program, Divine Pryor, the Executive Director of the Center for NuLeadership on Urban Solutions at Medgar Evers College, will talk about an effort to change the way prisoners are counted in the federal Census as residents of the counties where they are incarcerated. Also, Dr. Pryor will talk about new strategies to bring formerly incarcerated New Yorkers into the workforce.

Hasan Jeffries

And the show also will include a discussion with Hasan Kwame Jeffries, the author of ““Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt.” The book offers a fascinating look at the struggle for black voting rights and civil rights in a relatively obscure county in Alabama – and the implications of that struggle for 21st Century American. Dr. Jeffries is a professor of history at Ohio State University. Jonathan Hicks, a DBC senior fellow and former political reporter for The New York Times, is the show’s host.

Urban Focus is broadcast nation-wide via the Internet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at http://streaming.intacs.com/clients/medgarevers. In Brooklyn, the program will be aired on BCAT TV on Channel 70 (Cablevision), Channel 56 (Time Warner), Channel 44 (Verizon ) and Channel 84 (RCN). Urban Focus will be broadcast every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and programs will be archived here on the DuBois Bunche Center’s website.

Through interviews with politicians, policy makers, industry practitioners, scholars and expert analysts, Urban Focus will explore a range of issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Cape Town, South Africa. The discussions will serve to both draw attention to problems and highlight solutions for issues of concern to these communities.
