DBC Takes It’s Thurgood Marshall Plan to NY City Council
DBC Executive Director Roger Green recently met with a number of New York City Council members and offered a detailed presentation of the Thurgood Marshall Plan, a wide-ranging package of proposals intended to ensure that federal stimulus funds are targeted at urban areas with the greatest need. Specifically, the meeting focused on the need to ensure that the federal dollars are used to increase the participation of business owners who are African-American, Latino and Asian. The meeting was convened by City Council members Inez Dickens of Manhattan and Larry B. Seabrook of the Bronx. Other Council members who participated in the meeting were Diana Reyna of Brooklyn and Leroy Comrie of Queens.
The Thurgood Marshall Plan is the centerpiece of the DuBois Bunche Center’s agenda for economic recovery for Urban America. DBC is urging the Council to draft and pass legislation that takes into account significant features of the Thurgood Marshall Plan. “The plan is an important tool in ensuring that the Obama Administration’s stimulus package will address long-term, chronic unemployment and asset disparities within urban centers.”
Also attending the meeting and supporting the plan were officials of District Council 37, the city’s largest municipal union, and the Community Services Society of New York, a leader in innovative programs to support poor New Yorkers.
